Op mijn 10e klassieke gitaar begonnen in de muziekschool - 16j oud, folk & blues toestanden. Naar den unief in Gent (kunstgeschiedenis), maar gestopt na de kandidaturen (wegens niet intuweel genoeg). Ondertussen (mid-seventies) in free-jazz en andere geïmproviseerde muziek aktief (gitaar geraakt op achtergrond, studeer kontrabas o.a. bij Kent Carter) : optredens op eerste WIM-festivals, in BIM Amsterdam, jazzbunker Rotterdam,... met o.a. Peter Cussack (UK), Luk Houtkamp, Gilius Van Bergeyk (NL), Logos-ensemble, Wim-bigband (Fred Van Hove, Andre Goudbeek,..), Chris Joris, Michel Mast,...
Na een paar jaar werd ik me pijnlijk bewust van mijn muzikale tekortkomingen
en ging aan het konservatorium studeren. Einddiploma kontrabas, free-lance
in Filharmonie v. Vlaanderen, opera-orkesten (Munt, OVV, VLOS), kameropera
Transparant, verschillende losvaste barokensembles (waarin ik kontrabasgamba
ofte violone speelde), opnames voor radio, cd's...
Ondertussen (eind jaren '80) via Johan De Smet (ik speelde mee in zijn
opera's met Arne Sierens, de Simpletones en andere toestanden) terug in
min of meer alternatieve & improvisatie dingen.
Aan het conservatorium ben ik een ensemble voor hedendaagse muziek begonnen,
het Cheops kwartet ; we speelden alleen nieuwe, speciaal voor ons gekomponeerde
muziek van o.a. Boudewijn Buckinx, Godfried-Willem Raes, Frank Nuyts,
Dominique Lawalrée, Lucien Goethals.
De BRT radio3 heeft "Philemon & Baucis", een 55 minuten durende
soort gesproken opera van mij voor dit ensemble plus 2 recitanten (Ugo
Prinssen en Doris Van Caeneghem) opgenomen en ondertussen een paar keer
uitgezonden.
Eind 1997 heb ik een multimediaspektakel (alt-stem, enkele instr., computer, diamontage) ineen geflanst op basis van teksten van Jules Verne : "Voyage au Centre des Eléments".
Daarna ben ik met "The Mean Team" begonnen.
De muziek was ditmaal wel meer beat en jazzy gericht en haalde op een
nogal oneerbiedige manier de muziekgeschiedenis van het voorbije meanellium
door de mangel.
The Mean Team was ook aanleiding om de mogelijkheden van de elektrische
basgitaar te exploreren. Sedert ik dit 6-snarengeval (foto rechts) bij
Jon Shuker
heb laten maken heb ik mijn kontrabas alleen nog aangeraakt om hem af
te stoffen.
Met dit instrument heb ik ook medewerking verleend aan "Camino de Santiago"
(solo partij!) van Boudewijn
Buckinx, "Bending the tonic" van Guy
De Bievre en "544 Chords" van Tom Johnson (met Q-O2
ensemble).
Sedert 2006 voel ik me goed bij WoFo, een ensemble met o.a. klarinettist Mattias Laga en tenorsaxer Michel Mast. Geen metamusica meer, gewoon gezamelijk gezellig muziek maken. En ondertussen (2013) zijn we meer dan 80 optredens en 4 cd's verder...
In 2012 heb ik me een renaissance viola da gamba laten bouwen en exploreer samen met blokfluitist Marcel Ketels en gelijkgestemde enthousiastelingen het prachtige, maar meestal weinig te horen repertoire van de 16e eeuw. Vele concertproducties zouden volgen waarbij oude muziek werd ingebracht in het repertoire van het Logos Robotorkest. Bij mijn op pensioenstelling bij Stichting Logos, speelde ik een opgemerkt programma met Dirk Moelants, Ludwig Van Gijsegem en Marcel Ketels. Dat concert was helemaal uitverkocht.
Verder ben ik gelukkig getrouwd, maak graag websites, kan een piano
stemmen, hou van lekker eten, spreek een mondje Turks, heb een brevet

Started my adventure in music in the mid '70 with improvised music/freejazz.
Felt the need for a stronger background and studied double bass at the
Ghent Conservatory.
Worked as a free-lance player, learned piano tuning and - in 1992 - started
to work at Logos Foundation.
Composed some works, most for projects in which I was also involved as
a performer.
Major projects "Philemon & Baucis", "Voyage au Centre des Eléments",
switched the old double bass for the 6-string bass guitar in the meta
musical "The Mean Team" ensemble involving multimedia, now composing for
& performing with somekindofjazzband WoFo
Long & boring bio:
* Born 1954 in Oostende, Belgium.
After learning classical guitar in my youth, I became interested in improvised
music/free jazz (early 1970's), switched to double bass; workshops and
private-courses with K. Carter, S. Lacy, J. Tchicai, Cl. Thornton, P.
Kowald.
Upon accomplishment of my studies at the Royal Music Conservatory of Gent,
I started working as a free-lance double bass player in various symphonic
and opera orchestras and as a violone player in baroque music ensembles.
Collaboration at various radio and cd recordings.
As from 1992 working at the Logos Foundation (center for experimental
music), Gent.
* During my studies at the conservatory, I formed a new music ensemble
- the 'Cheops'quartet - with some friends. We created work of, mostly,
Belgian composers and acquired a solid reputation on performances and
radio recordings. As a member of 'Cheops' I could also expand my skills
as a composer, the ensemble being literally a soundboard and sound laboratory.
My interests in composing started much earlier though. Even in my early
experiences with improvisation groups, I very much liked to provide starting
material for improvisation, to introduce structures.
In 1988 BRTN (Belgian Radio and Television) Radio 3 recorded my composition
'NIX', performed by the 'Cheops'quartet.
A more ambitious project was 'Philemon & Baucis', written in colaboration
with author Peter Cnop and based on one of Ovid's 'Metamorphoses'. This
about one hour lasting work is written for two actors (Doris Van Caeneghem
and Ugo Prinsen on the radio recording) and the Cheops'ensemble.
In 1997 followed another music theatre work for small ensemble and alto
Lucy Grauman, based on texts of Jules Verne: "Voyage au Centre de Eléments".

* In 1998, I grabbed my old bass guitar and started "The Mean Team" with
Luc van Lieshout (Tuxedomoon), Michel Mast (Flat Earth Society), Michael
Weilacher (Ictus ensemble), Mattias Laga (Jaune Toujours). It was a not
so serious band, treating the media and the history of music in a rather
unrespectful way. After 5 very successful concerts in 5 years, I had to
conclude that there is no place for such music in the Belgium.
* Switched to 6-string bass guitar in 2001, participated in projects with
Guy De Bièvre, Peter Zummo, Tom Hamilton, Anne LaBerge, Stephie
Büttrich, Q-O2 ensemble, solo in an open-air oratorio by Boudewijn
Buckinx.
Since 2012 I started playing Viola de Gamba and Violone and worked out
many concerts with the Logos Robotorchestra and musicians Dirk Moelants,
Ludwig Van Gijsegem and Marcel Ketels. I retired from my job at Logos
Foundation on february 14th 2018.
As from now, I'm happy playing with some friends, no metafysics, no extravaganzas,
just music, just fun.
