Fri-Rick

for clavichord and solo voice

This piece is based on the german text below. This text should be sung by the vocal soloist bocca chiusa, so with the mouth completely shut! Nevertheless the singer should try to articulate all text as clearly as possible and should produce a clearly audible fundamental tone, varying with text inflection, at any time. The formants of the text (if it were just spoken...) are performed on the clavichord and are at the base of all notes in the score. The score is in fact an instrumental application of a technique very common in electroacoustic music since the fifties of the previous century: vocoding.

Fische reinigt man vom Unrat,

dadurch klappt derselbe auseinander,

The score was realized by the author, using his own <GMT> software language for musical composition. First the above text was recorded and saved as a 'wav' file in 16 bit resolution. Then this audio file was submitted to a spectral transform (DFT). The spectrum-in-time result was then passed to a special program for conversion to a score file. Adaptations to take into account the compass of the clavichord, polyphonic limitations, redundancy filters are a part of this composition specific piece of software.

The score is to be played about four times faster than possible. A very virtuoso page turner may be required. The total duration of the piece should not go much beyond about 5 minutes.

This composition was premiered on december 4th, 2001 by Lies Gellinck (voice), Marc Maes (clavichord) and Thomas Smetryns (pageturner) at the Logos Tetrahedron, at 20h00.

Performances for a 'singing' clavichord player are imaginable as well. The score is is available on request from the logos foundation: email: info@logosfoundation.org
