<Controlling Small Stepping Motors>

Small stepping motors rated for 12V operation can be easily found on the market or taken from old printers, disk drives etc...

They can be steered using dedicated chips, generating the required pattern. An example using the UCN4202 chip is given below:

The speed is derived from the pulses generated by a simple 555 oscilator, but of course could also come from a computer or microprocesssor. As shown, the circuit can perform stand alone. Other types of motors can be used as well.

 

Of course, we can also generate the pattern ourselves and confine this task to a Basic Stamp, as shown in the circuit below, developed for our automated vibraphone (Vibi):
